Home > News >Stories > The Significance of Gym Shorts The Significance of Gym Shorts e Significance of Gym ShortsDon’t ask me how this line of conversation got started, but at last Thursday’s Senior Women Fellowship, we all got giggling over the topic of public school gym suits. Remember going to the town department store to buy them in August before the school year started? Most everyone wore some combination of navy and white: white blouses with navy short, or the opposite. Some of the shorts had a wide cut, others had elastic leg edges that fit snugly. Another person remembered wearing a short jumpsuit with a belt at the waist. And Lorraine Robinson, who has the most remarkable memory of anyone I know, remembered wearing a bloomer-style gym suit.
None of this has anything to do with our Bible study, but it has everything to do with what makes small group ministry good for the soul, and a blessed ‘communion of saints’! Small group ministry creates opportunities for laughter, sharing our lives and our memories, praying for each other, studying the Bible together, and growing in faith.
Senior Women Fellowship is a delightful small group that meets the third Thursday at noon each month, in Fellowship Hall. I have been leading a study on the women you find in the book of Genesis, Chapters 12-50. This covers the Patriarchal narratives from Abraham through Joseph. Correction, make that Sarah to Potiphar’s wife! We’re going to continue now through the summer months studying the women we meet in the Biblical narrative of Exodus, beginning with Moses’ two mothers!
Doreen Mayer coordinates Senior Women’s Fellowship. When I asked her why she feels small groups are important, she told me about a Quilters group she organized 20 years earlier, at Grace Lutheran Church, in Austin, Minnesota, where her husband served as Pastor. Doreen has participated in small groups and Women’s Circles all her life; but the group that remains particularly special to her is a Quilter’s group, who recently sent Doreen a card, signed by all its members, a testament to the enduring bonds of fellowship built through this group. Doreen also met every Monday with a Women’s group for Bible study at member’s homes and brunch.
Which reminds me, small groups feed us, they feed us, literally! If you come to Senior Women Fellowship, there are delectable desserts served with coffee. You just missed key lime pie in May, but please join us in June to nourish your body and soul!
Together in Christ,
Pastor Chris |
