“The World Wide Web has revolutionized communication, and I’ve wondered how the church might utilize this technology to further God’s kingdom.”

An On-line Journal: www.PastorDurk.blogspot.com

For years I’ve found myself fascinated with the role of technology in the church’s life and mission. I’ve checked out web sites for devotional readings and Bible studies or worked with web teams to explore better ways to utilized church web sites.

At my previous congregation in Hopkins, I conducted a web-based Bible study and discussion. What happened over the course of two years was interesting. Here was an attractive 24/7 Bible study opportunity for busy people. There was an incredible amount of interest initially, so people signed on. In the end, what I found was that most people read my Bible study notes, but the level of response and discussion was low.

Since 1995, my course and seminary work toward my Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Seminary has centered on the role of technology for Bible studies and outreach in congregations. The World Wide Web has revolutionized communications, and I’ve wondered how the church might utilize this technology to further God’s kingdom.

My latest adventure in this whole area started a few weeks ago. A friend and ministry colleague encouraged me to start a blog. I replied, “A blog?” I’ve heard of it, but really had no idea what it’s all about. He said that a blog is basically a web-based journal that others can read. Blog is short for “web-log.”

Well, last week I took a few minutes to jot down some thoughts, and I started a blog. It was up and running in a matter of minutes.

The blog offers brief reflections on books and articles that I’ve read. There will also be occasional thoughts and reflections on movies and plays and other events in light of our Christian faith. You may also find portions of my sermons on the blog as well. From my devotion and prayer time, I will offer thoughts, reflections, and a challenge for the week.

Take a minute in the next few days to visit my on-line journal at www.pastordurk.blogspot.com. If there is something that stimulates or inspires you, please let me know by sending an e-mail at revpeterson@mglc.org. My intent is to write an entry once or twice each week.

Finally, if there is a web site that you’ve found to be helpful in your faith life, please let me know and we can publish it in an upcoming Messenger newsletter for others to enjoy.

In Christ’s Service as a “Tech” Pastor Wannabe,

Pastor Durk Peterson
